On November 5th of 2018, we received the following precious email from La Gartier bride Melissa Halloran in our inbox:

This was the beginning of a commissioned project that turned out to be absolutely stunning. Using fabric from our client's mothers' wedding dresses is something that we specialize in, so to say that we invited this customization with open arms is a total understatement. After a nearly two hour long phone consultation, Melissa shipped us a little baggie of appliques from her mother's gown and we set to work creating what might possibly be the prettiest "re-purposed mother's wedding dress" garters this side of the equator! Keep scrolling to see the final product as well as a few other jaw-dropping meaningful details! 

In total, we created three different custom garters for Melissa-- none of which she tossed. The one on the bottom was her keepsake and featured her mother's lace along the back band (see next photo for a visual) and the one in the middle also featured lace from her mother's gown. (more to come on this one in just a moment!) Then, the one at the top was a soft lavender velvet toss garter, created for Melissa just in case she decided to do the garter toss. (I knew that there was no way she was going to want to toss either of the two that included lace from her mother's gown. Those two were made as heirloom items, meant to be cherished for years or passed down to a loved one in the future.) 

Pictured above: the back band of Melissa's keepsake garter featured lace appliques taken straight from Melissa's mother's gown. Do you see that little fan-shaped, floral-inspired lace piece to the left?! That was taken directly from the wedding dress that Melissa's mother said I Do in! I die. So special. 

To make her garter set even more special, we carefully embroidered Melissa's wedding date as well as her + her fiance's initials onto the inside back band her keepsake garter. My favorite part? Melissa requested that we do the embroidery in blue, thereby checking off her "something blue"!

But wait. I have to pay homage to my absolute favorite part of her wedding garter set! While I adore the heirloom details from her mother's wedding dress, this little silver compass pendant was the icing on the cake. It was a tiny compass that Melissa sent to us, symbolizing a very special aspect of her relationship. On it, the words "Direction, Transition, Objective"

When I sit back and look at this set, all I can remember are all of the texts, emails, and late-night conversations that Melissa and I shared during the creative process of her garters. These are precious moments indeed. However, even more special is the idea of Melissa potentially passing these garters down to a daughter of her own one day. 

Melissa, if you are reading this, I am so thrilled that we had a chance to work together in making these! I am touched that you trusted me with something so significant from your mom's wedding dress!
