Everything You Need To Know About Wedding Garters
By Sarah Dobson
The world of wedding planning must feel like a whole new world for you. Yesterday, you were shopping for cute date-night outfits and now you are knee-deep in the world of bridal. Am I right?
<Insert: "Toto, I've a feeling we aren't in Kansas anymore" quote here>
I don't know who needs to hear this, but you are not alone. Whatever you do, d
on't assume
that it's just you. Literally
the only people in the world
who enter the ultra-girly-world-of-bridal with prior knowledge are, well, people like me who have lived and breathed it
for ten years.
So, when it comes to garter questions, sit back and let me do all of the answering for you.
Today, we are going to answer to the most widespread questions concerning wedding garters just so we can gain a little clarity on this ultra-sexy accessory!
1. What is a Wedding Garter Exactly?
Traditionally, a garter is a narrow band of fabric worn on the leg to keep up stockings. However, modern garters aren’t used to support stockings anymore but serve as a part of a famed wedding tradition of tossing a garter OR for just keepsake purposes. Most of our brides opt to skip the garter removal tradition and just have something gorgeous that they can wear as they walk down the aisle...or, better yet, something that they can pass down through generations in the future.
In addition, brides today use garters
for all kinds other purposes as well.
For instance, our garters can be worn on your wedding night. (blow his mind? yes and yes.) In fact, just to give you an idea of how beautifully wedding garters pair with lingerie, check out the photo below!
2. Wedding Garter Toss Tradition
Truth fast: most of our brides don't even do the garter toss. However, let's cover it
still
just to get it covered in the event that you
are indeed
planning on doing the garter toss. The wedding garter
removal tradition consists of a groom removing a wedding garter either with his hands or teeth and tossing it to unmarried male guests. This tradition usually follows another one, the
bridal bouquet
tossing. According to the superstition, the girl who caught the bouquet and the man who caught the garter are the next to be married though not necessarily to each other. In some cases, those who catch a bouquet and a garter are supposed to share a dance, but that tradition isn’t always followed. However, as I said before, I don't know a ton of brides who do this anymore. In fact, most of our brides purchase a garter because they want something amazing to make their details photos pop, or because they want an heirloom accessory that they can pass down through generations. In fact, we wrote a whole blog about this last week called "
Five Uses For Your Wedding Garter Beyond The Garter Toss"
. If you have time, read it! It is full of useful information and tons of ideas for you like the one below!
3. How to Wear a Garter?
You aren't going to like this answer because it's not an answer. The truth is, is that you can wear your garter anywhere on your thigh that you like, That is to say, it is not important what leg you wear bridal wedding garters at. So, you can wear it on the right as well as on the left leg depending on how you like more. Some brides have two garters in order to toss one and keep the other for themselves. If you are one of them, place the garters on the same leg but locate the one for tossing lower so that it is easier for the groom to remove it. But hey, if you aren't doing the garter toss, then you can literally wear it wherever you want. Just make sure you wear it on your thigh. That is the only main rule.
4. What is the average price of a wedding garter?
Full transparency: Cheap garters usually range between twenty to forty dollars. BUT you get what you pay for. If you are looking for something that isn't cheesy and dated....or just downright ugly...then check out our collection of modern, sparkling wedding garters by clicking
here.
Our prices range from $35 all the way up to $300. There is a little bit of something for everyone in our bespoke wedding garter collection. The most popular garter in our collection is exactly $71 if that helps you to make your decision at all. Interested to see what it looks like? Please see the photo below!
5. How Do I Measure For A Wedding Garter?
We get this question so often that we actually wrote an entire blog about this! Interested to read it? Click
here
to be directed to our recent blog post titled "How To Measure For Your Wedding Garter"!
(or, just check out the little visual diagram below for a quick guide!)
