    Choose Your Fighter: A Bridal Garter Versus A Garter Belt

    If I had a penny for every time I heard someone refer to our garters as "garter belts," I would be quite wealthy by now. Er-- at least enough to take an extravagant vacation. (insert laughing emoji's here)

    The truth is-- there is a big difference between a wedding garter and a garter belt. So, in an attempt to bring clarity to this ever-confusing mix up, below is a quick visual guide regarding what a wedding garter is and what a garter belt is.

    First off, a garter belt. A garter belt is a piece of lingerie that goes around someone's waist. It is usually made of lace, but not always. The garter belt uses clips or snaps to hold up pantyhose or stockings.
    The garter belt started back in the days before elastic when holding up stockings what a lot harder and thus anchoring it around the waist made the most sense. Over time, I think we can all agree that garter belts have grown into a sexy symbol of femininity.
    Can you see the beautiful lace belt that goes around the waist and the straps that hang down to clasp onto the panty hose? That's a garter belt. It can be worn at any time of the year, at any point in your life -- no wedding required. When you wear a garter belt, it is ideal to have a pair of stockiing too. That way, you have something to clasp those darling little dangle down attachments too. BUT sometimes women where them without stockings too. Your call. I personally like them more when there are stockings involved but as always-- you do you girl. Ok, so now let's look at what a wedding garter is. (my fav part)

    Ok, now we are talking! Do you see that gorgeous sparkling band around the bride's leg in the photo above?! That's a garter. (also commonly referred to as a "wedding garter" or a "bridal garter.")

    The garter represents the oldest wedding tradition. It is a small piece of decorated material that is worn around one of the bride's legs during the wedding ceremony and reception. The garter is usually made with elastic so that it holds up while she is walking and dance. 

    The wedding garter is as a small little expression of a couple's big day and it is a keepsake meant to be cherished and passed on through generations. The wedding garter is an heirloom for the bride!

    Wedding Garters Made For Keeps

    When we first started making wedding garters in 2011, the wedding garter toss wasn't even on our minds. We set out to create an irresistibly cute, undeniably modern wedding garter design that was so carefully crafted, our brides would want to keep it for their entire lives. It wasn't until sometime around 2013 that we realized that we needed to add an affordable, super simple toss toss to our collection in order to accommodate all the brides who were sending us emails with questions like:
    "Ok, but I need a toss garter too. Do you have one in your collection?"
    At that point in time, because we were receiving so many requests for toss garters, we decided to create a simple toss garter that - first of all, wouldn't break the bank......and second of all, was cute enough that it would look lovely in photos but not so cute that our clients wouldn't want to toss it. 
    While we still offer a few styles of toss garters within our collection, we are primarily known for creating extremely unique, designer wedding garters that no one would ever dream of tossing. To be totally honest, I am not personally a huge fan of the garter toss, which is ironic due to the fact that I started La Gartier Wedding Garters and love it with every bone in my body.
    Disclaimer: if you and your partner are up for the garter toss at your wedding, then please know that I am not discouraging you. In fact, I say go for it! You do you at your wedding! Some couples are really excited about traditions and just couldn’t imagine getting married with out doing all the things, including tossing the garter.
    And, that’s great! You shouldn't feel bad about any of your choices at your wedding - be confident and be excited, because getting married is supposed to be fun! Don't let the garter toss haters get you down - you do what you want to do! It is your wedding, not theirs!

    Most arguably our most sought-after wedding garter design, the Venus Pearl garter is everything people say she is and more.  When aiming to find the balance between classicism and modernism, look no farther than the Venus Pearl garter. Set within a sparkling swarovski crystal front band, exactly 22 pearls gleam like eternal moons in an intentionally cluster-like, celestial pattern.  ☪️  The best part?     4. The Ever After Wedding Garter 

    Where do we start?? This garter is so magical, that we need at least a paragraph to describe its multi-dimensional components! 💎  First, a little back story: When creating this garter, the first feature that we knew that we wanted to include was tons of sparkle, a distinct 3-D floral element and a distinct "princess blue" color. 💙

    As you can see in the photos above, the front band is primarily comprised of clear, sparkling pear-shaped swarovski crystals. ✨  Blooming from within the sparkling band are exactly five flowers: three blue (made of a soft acrylic and a rhinestone detail at the center of each flower) as well as two white flowers (made of gauzy, ethereal organza with a pearl detail at the center.) 🌸

    The best part? The inside of the back band is embroidered with the words "Happily Ever After" in princess blue. (something blue? check and check✔️✔️) Other details to note: the back band is created using a lace overlay on the outside which can be admired from behind you was you walk down the aisle or dance the night away on the dance floor). The back band also features 15 sparkling swarovski crystal rhinestone embellishments. (hand-placed for extra sparkle.) ✨

    Created using swarovski crystals and a semi-transparent illusion midline, this garter features jewels set in a symbolic floral pattern along the bottom and top perimeter, making for a stunning organic shape. The back half of this garter is made of a soft light elastic with a ruffled organza overlay. If you look closely at the illusion midline of the garter, you will see a honeycomb crosshatched pattern, specifically made to mimic the iconic design elements found within the gown of Galia Lahav and Berta. 💗✨

    This design was inspired by the character of Cinderella. Thus, the subtle "Cinderella-dress-blue" tones that you see in the jewels above. 

    Every detail of this garter was inspired by the bride who adores animals and is well-known for her compassionate nature. More likely than not, this bride is not a very loud person. In fact, she might be one of the quietest people at a party, but she is known for carrying herself with a grace that is unparalleled. 💅🏻  Anyone who knows this bride is well aware of the fact that she believes deeply in acts of service, whether it be volunteering to help abandoned animals or assisting the elderly who have become too old to be able to care for themselves anymore. 💗 🧵

    Where Should I Measure For My Wedding Garter

    Surprisingly, the answer to this question is fairly simple. In fact, in an attempt to give you all of the information you need right away, using as little words as possible, above is a photo for you! 
    However, if you'd like more details, then stay right here. We are here for you every step of the way when it comes to measuring for your gorgeous wedding garter. (keep reading!)
    where do i measure for my wedding garter
    1. Step One: Get Your Hands On a Flexible Tape Measurer
    The best way to measure for your garter is to use one of these pretty little tape measurers that you see above. If you don't have one that looks like this, then no problem. I have a solution for you!  If you don't have a tape measure, use a piece of string and then put the string against a ruler to get the desired length. Do not pull the string or the tape measure tight. You want it to be form fitting and pulled securely around your leg.

    Step 2: Measure Your Thigh Roughly Six To Seven Inches From The Top Of Your Knee-Cap
    Ok, so truth-be-told, where you measure for your garter depends upon the style of your gown, however I'd say that 90% of the time, the middle of your thigh is where you will want to measure for your garter. There are a few places online that recommend just above the knee, but I have found that this is way too low for a garter to properly "grab" your leg and stay up as you take, say, more than seven to eight steps. That being said, we highly recommend the middle of your thigh for the best fit, the most comfortable wear, and the prettiest pictures. The only time there is an exception to this rule is if you have a super form fitting gown (like a mermaid or a trumpet) that hugs super close to your thighs before it lets out just above your knee. If this is the case, then measure just above your knee. That way, your garter won't be seen as a tiny ripple at mid-thigh. Not sure if your gown is straight-forward when it comes to where to measure?     Step 3: Leave Us Your Leg Measurement At Check Out
    Now that you have your measurement, we have terrific news! As you go through check out, you will notice that there is a special box that asks you for your unique measurement just before you enter your payment information! Simply round up or down to the nearest whole inch and pop your leg measurement right there into that box! This will allow us to custom make your garter/garters to fit your leg perfectly! 
    I know I mentioned this before, but if you have any questions at all regarding how to measure, or if you just want someone to hold your hand through the process, then please don't hesitate to email us at hello@lagartier.com. We are here for you! 
    (And now a quick word about losing weight: if you are a bride who is sweating for the wedding, then we recommend ordering your garter exactly two months before your wedding date. But honestly-- please don't wait too much longer than that. The elastic that we use along the back side of our designs will "shrink in" to accommodate for moderate weight loss (think of your favorite loung-around-the-house pants with the comfy elasticized waist band!) so the chances that your garter will still fit perfectly come your wedding day are pretty much 100%. However, if for any reason your garter is too loose come the weeks before your big day, then get in touch with us about resizing it!
